How long will it take to stitch?

Enter the number of stitches (or the size of the pattern), your pace and how long you stitch each week: the tool estimates the hours, the finish date, and the stitches per day to finish on time.

  • Hours and finish date
  • Stitches per day for a deadline
  • The editor's pace

My pace
A commonly quoted pace runs from 100 to 200 stitches an hour.

Cross stitch time is worked out by dividing the number of crosses by your pace: usually between 100 and 200 stitches an hour. A fully stitched 100 × 100 pattern therefore takes 50 to 100 hours. The tool above also gives the finish date and the stitches to do each day.

Stitching time for 12,000 stitches: 120 h at 100 stitches an hour, 80 h at 150 and 60 h at 200, with the finish date
12,000 stitches at 7 hours a week: stitching time and finish date by pace.

Estimate stitching time in 4 steps

  1. Count the stitches in the chart, or enter its width, height and the stitched share (a pattern with no background is often 50 to 70% stitched).
  2. Pick your pace : 100, 150 or 200 stitches an hour.
  3. Enter your stitching hours per week. The tool gives the total hours and the estimated finish date.
  4. Add a deadline (a birthday, Christmas): the tool works out the stitches to do each day to finish on time.

How many stitches can you do in an hour?

A commonly quoted pace runs from 100 stitches an hour, taking your time or with lots of thread changes, to 200, on large areas of a single color: that's the range used in the stixiva editor's beginner path. Your pace depends on several things:

  • the number of colors: every thread change takes time, and scattered areas (stray stitches) slow you down a lot;
  • the fabric: Aida with clearly visible holes stitches faster than fine linen stitched over 1;
  • special stitches: half stitches, quarter stitches, backstitch and knots are slower than full crosses;
  • practice: speed goes up noticeably after the first few projects.

Measuring your own pace

Time a half-hour session on a typical area of your chart, count the crosses and multiply by two. Measure again on a more colorful area: the average of the two is a good base for the tool.

How long does a cross stitch take?

Here are some benchmarks for a fully stitched pattern, with no background left empty:

Stitching hours for a fully stitched pattern, and weeks at 5 hours a week (average pace)
PatternStitches100 st. / h150 st. / h200 st. / hWeeks at 5 h
50 × 50 stitches2 50025 h17 h13 h3
80 × 80 stitches6 40064 h43 h32 h9
100 × 100 stitches10 000100 h67 h50 h13
150 × 150 stitches22 500225 h150 h113 h30
200 × 200 stitches40 000400 h267 h200 h53

A 100 × 100 pattern is 7.1 in (18.1 cm) square on 14-count Aida. At 5 hours a week and 150 stitches an hour, it takes about 13 weeks: most big pieces are counted in months, and that's part of their charm.

Finishing on time for a date

For a gift, start from the date and work backwards: the tool gives the number of crosses to stitch each day. Keep a week or two of slack for finishing (washing, ironing, framing or sewing), which often takes longer than planned.

If the daily pace looks too high, you have three levers: shrink the pattern, leave the background empty, or pick a lower-count fabric for the same look with less detail. The size and fabric to cut tool helps you compare.

Tracking your progress

Highlighting finished stitches on a paper chart shows how far you've come. In the stixiva editor, stitching mode does it on screen: it marks finished stitches, on a tablet or phone, and gives your progress as a percentage and the stitches left per floss.

Our take

A time estimate isn't a speed target: it helps you pick a project that fits your life and avoid finishing a gift in a panic the night before. We suggest measuring your own pace once, then letting the tool do the math. And keeping time for the joy of stitching.

How many stitches can you do in an hour?

Usually between 100 and 200 crosses, depending on experience, fabric and number of colors.

How long does a 100 × 100 stitch piece take?

Fully stitched, it has 10,000 crosses: 50 to 100 hours. It measures 7.1 × 7.1 in (18.1 × 18.1 cm) on 14-count Aida.

How do I find my pace?

Time half an hour of stitching, count the crosses and multiply by two. Do it again on a more colorful area and keep the average.

How many stitches a day to finish on time?

Enter the deadline in the tool: it divides the remaining stitches by the number of days. Keep a week or two for finishing.

Does a pattern with no background stitch faster?

Yes: only stitched crosses count. Enter the stitched share (60%, for example) if you only know the size of the pattern.

How do I track my progress?

In the editor, stitching mode highlights finished stitches and gives your progress as a percentage and the stitches left per floss.

Track your progress stitch by stitch

The editor's stitching mode marks finished stitches, on a tablet or phone, and shows the stitches left per floss.
