Types of software

“Cross stitch software” covers very different tools. Knowing which family to look in saves time.

Online studios

They open in the browser, nothing to install: photo to pattern, editing and export.

  • stixiva · Online cross stitch studio and Windows app. Make, edit and reuse charts, from photo to PDF pattern. Free during the public beta, with an account, no credit card.
  • Stitchmate · An online chart studio, with stitch tracking. Convert a photo into a chart with less confetti, and only pay for printed patterns. Free to design; printable PDF from $7.99 per pattern (5 for $12, 10 for $20), or a $99 pass ($149 to sell).

Classic programs, bought once and installed on the computer.

  • WinStitch and MacStitch · Full chart software for Windows and Mac. Demanding stitchers who want full software installed on Windows or Mac. Premium: £46 or equivalent ($47 before tax), one-time purchase; free demo without printing or export.

Tracking apps

They don’t create charts: they open a PDF pattern and track stitched stitches.

  • Pattern Keeper · An Android app that opens PDF patterns and tracks stitched stitches. Track a PDF pattern bought from a supported designer on Android. One-month full trial, then about $9 one-time purchase.
  • Markup R-XP · An iPhone, iPad and Android app to mark up your patterns and track your stitching. Track any pattern, paper or PDF, on iPhone, iPad or Android. Two-week trial, then £14.99 a year (before tax).

Free cross stitch software

During its public beta, stixiva is free with an account, PDF pattern included. Among the other programs compared, 2 are completely free for printing your patterns:

  • FlossCross · Free, no sign-up. Make a chart for free, with no account.
  • Pic2Pat · Free, PDF included (floss and fabric kits sold separately). Get a chart from a photo quickly and for free, without editing it.

The others are free to try or to design, but charge for the PDF, a license or a subscription: the “Free PDF pattern” row of the table says so for each one.

Five questions to ask yourself

1. What does a pattern really cost?

Many tools are free for designing but charge for the PDF you print: per pattern, by subscription or by license. Look at what you have to pay to print your patterns: it’s the chart’s horizontal axis.

2. Which device will you work on?

An online studio follows you on computer, tablet and phone. Installed software only runs on the system it was made for, usually Windows.

3. What happens to confetti?

A converted photo leaves isolated stitches, slow to stitch for a single color. Some tools leave them, others find them and offer to merge them: the “Isolated stitch cleanup” row of the table.

4. Can you reuse your old patterns?

.pat, .xsd and .oxs files move from one program to another. A paper pattern or a purchased PDF needs a tool that can read a symbol chart.

5. How will you stitch?

If you stitch with a tablet beside you, stitch tracking stops you losing your place. It exists in some studios and in dedicated apps.

Our method

This comparison is published by stixiva, one of the programs compared. The other programs’ listings are taken from their official websites, linked below, between October 16, 2026 and November 1, 2026. The names mentioned are trademarks of their respective owners; stixiva is not affiliated with any of them. Has something changed? Email contact@stixiva.com and we’ll correct the listing.

A “not stated” cell means the official website doesn’t mention it: the feature may exist without being presented. We don’t give an overall score, only criteria anyone can check.

FAQ

Before you choose your software.

Another question? Email us at contact@stixiva.com.

What is the best free cross stitch software?

It depends on what you want to do. For a quick photo conversion, an online converter is enough. To edit the chart and print a PDF pattern without paying, stixiva is free during its public beta, and so is FlossCross. The table shows, program by program, what is free.

Do I need to install software to make a pattern?

No. Several studios open in the browser, on a computer or a tablet. Installed software is still useful for working offline.

Can I open a pattern made in another program?

Often, yes, thanks to exchange formats: .pat (PCStitch), .xsd (Pattern Maker) and .oxs. The “Opens .pat, .xsd, .oxs” row of the table shows which programs can read them.

Which cross stitch software works on a Mac?

On a Mac, online studios open in Safari or Chrome with nothing to install. For installed software and apps, the table lists a Mac version for Stitchmate, WinStitch and MacStitch, Stitchly and Magic Needle.

Which cross stitch app for a phone or tablet?

The apps to install are Stitchly, Magic Needle, Pattern Keeper and Markup R-XP. The online studios (stixiva, Stitchmate, Stitch Fiddle, FlossCross and Knytstudio) also open in a tablet’s browser.

How are the criteria chosen?

They are verifiable features that each publisher presents on its website: price, devices, formats, drawing and tracking tools. We don’t give ratings: each cell points to what the publisher states.
